Strengthening Our Tribal Nations: Strategic HR for Capacity and Self-Governance
Today’s Raving NEXT Leadership Roundtable brought together Tribal leaders, HR professionals, and enterprise executives for a conversation focused on one of the most important long-term investments Tribal nations can make: their people.
Facilitated by Christopher Orozco, Raving Partner, HR & Leadership, and moderated by Deana Scott, CEO of Raving, the discussion explored how HR is evolving beyond traditional administrative functions to become a strategic driver of organizational capacity, leadership development, and long-term self-governance across Indian Country.
As Tribal enterprises continue to expand across gaming, hospitality, healthcare, government, and other sectors, participants discussed the growing need for leadership pipelines, succession planning, and workforce strategies that align with each nation’s broader vision and values.
Key themes from the roundtable included:
- Transitioning HR into a strategic partner for Tribal nation building
- Building cross-enterprise talent pipelines and succession plans
- Using workforce data to support leadership and operational decision-making
- Strengthening engagement and retention through culturally grounded approaches
- Balancing organizational growth with long-term community and leadership development
The conversation also highlighted the challenges many organizations are navigating as operations become more complex, including recruitment, retention, leadership continuity, and maintaining culture across expanding enterprises.
Designed as an interactive peer discussion, the session encouraged attendees to share real-world experiences and practical approaches they are implementing within their own organizations and Tribal enterprises.
This session was part of the ongoing Raving NEXT Leadership Series focused on leadership, workforce strategy, and organizational development across Indian Country.
